What is the Difference Between Structural Design and Structural Analysis?

Structural analysis and structural design are closely related but serve different purposes in engineering. Structural analysis focuses on determining the effects of loads (such as dead load, live load, wind, and seismic forces) on a structure. Engineers use software like ETABS or SAP2000 to calculate internal forces, stresses, and deflections.

On the other hand, structural design is the process of selecting appropriate materials and member sizes to safely resist those forces. It ensures that beams, columns, and foundations meet safety and serviceability requirements based on design codes.

In simple terms, analysis tells you what happens, while design determines what should be built.
